Workers combine the personal and professional

 Social media has changed the nature of communication across communities. And, it continues to break down barriers in the workplace too. As employees everywhere become more social and more connected, they are seeking opportunities to combine their work and their personal lives.

 

 

In our annual round up of research for 2013, we see that the tide has well and truly turned with respect to how workers see the role and importance of personal technology tools and social media in the workplace. When asked about whether employees should be allowed to use their smartphones or tablets in the workplace, even if it is for personal reasons, this is what they said:

It is clear that the line between the personal and the professional is diminishing and organizations are being challenged to embrace this change for more efficient and effective operations. The power and the speed of this transformation is having a significant impact on employer-employee relations, not least of all because many employers are failing to keep pace with these changing worker attitudes.

Instead, we still find that many policies governing the way employees use technology and social media channels in the workplace are hindering rather helping productivity.
