Research and Development Careers
Do you consider yourself to be a human Google? Do you like to continually question everything? Are you constantly looking for solutions to problems that may not yet have been spotted? Then somewhere out there is a research and development department that would greatly benefit from your outlook.
Without the hard work of anyone working in Research and Development (R&D), we would see very little progress in scientific innovation and technological advancement wouldn’t exist. In the world of life sciences - particularly pharmaceuticals - it is the people who help with this developmental research who help bring new medicines to market.
The role involves assessing the strengths and weaknesses of products. Then, identify ways in which they could work better. Working within an R&D department you’ll spend a typical day working alongside other scientists carrying out experiments and tests. Then, you'll record your results and present those findings to senior staff. Many R&D scientists are also actively involved in developing prototypes and samples through a process of testing and tweaking products.
You’ll need an excellent academic record and a degree in a science topic to get into developmental research. Chemistry, engineering, biomedical sciences, pharmacology or computer science are all good groundings for this role. Personal attributes like an enquiring mind, inquisitiveness and tenacity are also crucial for this type of work.
You’ll typically be based within a laboratory and conducting experiments under your own steam while working as part of a larger team. A research and development career offers a high level of autonomy. It's intellectually stimulating for the brightest of minds.
In industry, R&D fuses scientific achievement with business goals. It demands both practical and profitable results. Specific knowledge in one scientific area could naturally lead you to your ideal role in R&D in the life sciences sector – where your previous experience would be highly valued.
