You may choose to specialise as a Materials, Mechanical or Electrical Quality Engineer – working with product spec, components or electricity respectively. You may also step up to a Senior Quality Engineer level where you may be involved in setting up the standards the team is working to or go into auditing.

Quality engineer responsibilities may vary across industries. Within life sciences, the role may be lab-based where you’ll be replicated real-life situations to assess how well something performs. You’ll also be keeping excellent records of your findings and making recommendations for improvements. An understanding of industry regulations is vital as this is what you’ll be working towards.
