Kingston upon Thames, or simply, Kingston is a town, former manor and a small borough within Greater London. It was formerly in the country of Surrey. Kingston is identified as a crucial part of the future London plan and is today a major retail centre. The name Kingston is derived from an old phrase 'Kinges Tun' which means royal farm or estate. Within Kingston is often regarded to be one of the founding places of England. Up until the mid 20th century, Kingston was the main location for weapon and aircraft manufacturing for the British army and the then British Empire.
