Job description


We are looking for a talented Senior Test Technician to join our team specialising in Engineering for our Engine Business Segment in Darlington.


This is a permanent role working 8-week rotation, 12 hours shifts 7.00am - 7.00pm and 7.00pm - 7.00am.


Salary is £26,000 - £30,000 depending on experience along with shift allowance and the potential for overtime.


In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:

  • Prepares test articles for test, including initial build and final tear down.
  • Responsible for installing instrumentation into test articles per relevant engineering standards.
  • Assists in testing in accordance with established test procedures and methodology.
  • Prepare test articles and associated fixtures, rigs, and equipment for testing.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the function of test equipment and the contribution of the test equipment to the validity of test results.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the functioning of the product under test to assess the contribution of the product to the validity of the test results.
  • Performs test stand installation, troubleshooting and setups and the upkeep and maintenance of laboratory equipment.


To be successful in this role you will need the following:

  • Deliver content of rigging instructions for the Product Development test facility.
    To ready engines for test with all rigging requirements.
  • ONC/HNC in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent would be preferred but not essential, working towards these would also be considered.
  • Ensure engine is filled with correct oil prior to installation into the test cell.
  • Ensure basic engine alignment is within spec at pre-test prior to installing engine.
  • Facilitate the install and/or remove engines from test cell.
  • Complete engine and dyno alignment as per procedure.
  • Controlled tear-down and rebuilds, prepare engines for test, fault diagnosis and rectification to ensure good test progress against the work-plan and instructions.
  • Record data, torque settings, backlash etc. record detrimental conditions found on the engine e.g. bearing wear.
  • General maintenance of test equipment, fitting of prop shafts, exhausts, upkeep of test pallets using a variety of workshop practices.
  • Download and check calibration files ready for test.
  • Run improvement initiatives in the area to improve efficiency.
