Kelly Services are supporting an independent medical research charity with over 25 years' experience in helping scientists and organisations turn their research into effective diagnostics and treatments.
Our client's Technology Transfer (TT) division collaborates with and provides services to a range of partners and clients. In addition, our client has launched a Philanthropic and an Early Venture Fund and has in-house research and development functions at its Centre for Therapeutics Discovery (CTD) and Centre for Diagnostics Development (CDD).
The Technology Transfer team identifies promising science with potential to benefit patients. We support the translation of that science, including intellectual property (IP) protection and the securing of funding, and we help our clients commercialise their project for potential partnering.
Work collaboratively in project teams to progress projects to a point at which they are ready for partnering with industry.
Develop strong working relationships with a portfolio of MRC scientists, identifying work which has commercial potential and engaging with the pharma and biotech industry to progress these for patient benefit.
Identify new intellectual property developed within a given portfolio of research scientists.
Establish the best route for translation of MRC IP (e.g. licensing, spin out), identifying potential commercial partners, deciding deal value, engaging in negotiations and finalising deals, working together with a designated licensing officer on the associated agreements.
Perform diligence to assess commercial viability, novelty, inventiveness, ownership, rights to use, technical feasibility and protectability.
Implement the necessary protection and prosecution of either MRC or our client's IP by instructing external patent / trademark attorneys.
Coordinate, implement and project manage the process for adding value to intellectual property through collaboration with other academics, industry or our client's CTD or by securing development funding from relevant sources.
Provide training and advisory services on IP protection and commercialisation to our client and their partners.
Work with the Charity Business Manager in TT to deliver IP Management services for one or more charity clients. This would include analysis of charity grant funded projects to assess their IP and commercial potential and engaging with funded scientists and their institute technology transfer office.
Collaborate with colleagues in the Business Development Division and CTD on drug discovery projects to put agreements in place with academic associates and to identify, protect and manage arising IP.
Gain necessary skills and experience in all areas through day-to-day work and participation in relevant internal/external training courses and networking events
The successful candidate will ideally have experience in translational science management or technology transfer in a medical science discipline, and:
Be qualified to PhD level (or have equivalent experience) in a relevant scientific field and have worked in or closely with the pharmaceutical/biotech industry.
Have the ability to quickly grasp new scientific concepts and technologies and to identify where there may be translational potential and how this could be realized.
Have a broad understanding of the therapeutic development process and of the academic, biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry marketplace.
Be able to communicate verbally and in writing efficiently and credibly with a range of stakeholders, including scientist, industry and with colleagues as well as have the ability to influence and constructively challenge key individuals within the organisation and across the scientific community at all levels.
Have experience or knowledge of IP evaluation, management and licensing in an academic or commercial environment which should include identification, due diligence and protection of IP and working with external patent professionals in securing Worldwide patents.
Knowledge and awareness of the issues around spin-out creation.
Have a successful track record of handling negotiations.
Have project management experience including the ability to manage and progress multiple projects efficiently.
