Finding The Balance

Stephanie Dowson-Park

Balancing

Is the 9-5 gone for good?

As a new generation enters and begins to dominate the workforce, the traditional 9-5 is becoming increasingly out of touch. A recent survey showed that less than 10% of the UK population have jobs with these traditional working hours . There is also data from YouGov polls showing that the most efficient places to work and live are the places where employers are open to negotiate flexible office hours.

According to Deloitte, approximately 75% of the global workforce will consist of millennials by 2025 . This group is seeking greater autonomy and flexibility than predecessors. This means companies will have to start reevaluating their talent approach.

The option for remote work means that people can work efficiently from the comfort of their own homes. This revolution means the workforce is able to enjoy the benefits of their professional, personal and social life in a way that is convenient to them .

Since a young age, we have all been asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?”. Traditionally answers have always been a single occupation, often what we regard to be our dream job. Nowadays, newer generation have the highest percentage of job-hopping than any other. Going from job to job, company to company is now becoming a norm with millennials. This group has an increasing incentive to take up a better offer once one comes their way.

The way in we which millennials now interact with colleagues and friends revolves around technology. With being able to grow up as technology revolutionizes, the next generation may very well achieve a greater sense of community than ever before .

Having said that, there is an emerging paradox when it comes to technology. We may feel too addicted to our smartphones and our gadgets, which may make us feel disconnected from people. We may often rely on social media to keep us entertained . How often have you been with a group of friends, but everyone was on their phones?

Even the younger generation, gen Z and Alpha, are established digital natives. How often have you seen children, be our younger nephews, nieces and cousins confidently using their own tablets and smartphones. Who knows what the future may hold for them. Will it be the case that they will be doing everything we are, but only from their bedrooms, and during what hours that they choose?
