ACOMB Apprentice Recognised for Achievement
NEWS RELEASE
17th August 2004
Dave Stephenson, from Acomb in Yorkshire, has won the Finning (UK) Ltd ‘Second Year Apprentice’ award sponsored by specialist recruiters Kelly Engineering Resources.
The sought after award is based on an entire year during which the performance of all 15 second year apprentices are closely scrutinised and marked across a wide criteria.
Dave and the other apprentices are given a daily score based on punctuality, conduct and time keeping. They are also scored on assignments to be completed along with NVQ units. The assignments are automatically deducted 25% for late submission. Finally, all the apprentices are closely monitored for a 10-week period by a mentoring engineer who marks them on many areas, including punctuality, commitment, observance of health & safety procedures and others.
Dave, who is based at the Finning Leeds depot, was awarded with a cheque for £300 and a trophy to mark his achievement at an awards event held in August and attended by the Finning Materials Handling Director, Tom McCloy, Graham Morris, from Kelly Engineering Resources and representatives from The Institute of the Motor Industry and the Hertford Learning & Skills Council.
Andy Kemp, training officer at Finning, commented, “All the apprentices worked exceptionally hard this year and the final result was very close. Many of the apprentices on the scheme averaged over a 95% score – a fantastic achievement as it takes in over 350 scores over a 12-month period. The winners and runners up deserve all the credit they receive. We have every confidence they will go on to achieve even more.”
Graham Morris, from Kelly Engineering Resources, said, “We congratulate Dave on his success and are delighted to be able to sponsor initiatives such as the Finning ‘Apprentice of the Year’ awards. Apprentice schemes, provided by companies like Finning UK, ensure that important knowledge and experience is passed on to the next generation of engineering talent and that can only be a good thing for Finning and for the country.”
