National Curriculum
The National Curriculum was introduced in 1989 in order to unify the educational programmes practised in English schools. It sets out, in broad terms, what schools must teach for each subject. Pupils aged 5 to 16 in state schools must be taught the National Curriculum, which is made up of the following subjects: English, mathematics, science, design & technology, history, geography, music, art, physical education (PE) and a modern foreign language.
The National Curriculum is divided into four stages. These are called Key Stages and depend on pupils' ages. Subject requirements vary in each Key Stage.
